This pattern is from Butterick’s Patterns by Gertie line, B6285. I was super excited about this one as I like both the top and skirt separately and together. It consists of a knit wrap around top and a double pleated skirt cut on the crossgrain.
I recently took a sloper class and used those measurements for this project. Like all patterns, there was a discrepancy between my bust and waist measurement. In Big 3 patterns, my waist is always about 2 inches bigger than what correlates for my bust. For the top, I went with my bust measurement and made size 14 and tapered the side seam down to add 1/2″ on the sides.
Next time I would also make the back about 2″ longer. It pops out of the ties fairly easily. I think I would also gather the darts.
The skirt was a mess for me. My waist was measured at 32″ recently so that corresponds perfect with the size 16. I made it and in the end had to take 3 inches out of the back/zipper seam and it is still a little big.
Also, the pattern says to slide the zipper down 1/4″ when you are attaching it. I would put the tape flush against the top cut line. I have a big gap (about 1/4″ shockingly) right now and I will have to use dreaded hook and eye closures to shore that up. I used a vintage button instead of the closure on the waist band.
WHAT I DID
The top is made out of a sweater-like knit. I think it makes the waist area too thick. I would use the lightest jersey possible to help with that. The self-lined construction looks so clean and makes this shirt nice for fall/winter. I love the tie!
The skirt is made out of a wool-blend suiting. Besides taking so much out of the waist I also took the hem up 4″. It is so full you definitely want it to hit at or just above your knee. I also used a regular zipper. Due to construction, I would use an invisible next time for sure.
I just realized by inserting these pictures that I should be wrapping the top over my bust and not under like a wrap dress! I will try that out lol
FINAL VERDICT: With a few adjustments I think this would have gone better for myself! I will add the hook and eye to the zipper top and see if that helps. I really want the skirt to work out! I wore the top to Thanksgiving and no one in my family commented on it so I think that means it passed as not homemade!
